Preferring to borrow its visual identity from narrative realities, the illusionary existence of Los Angeles feeds itself on idols of science fiction and cartoons. It is a city where projections for the future are aged even during the process.
In 2001, in the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, a new Frank Gehry structure started to rise. The rotating mass of the building resisting past tense conventions begin to shape up, as if like a character whose momentum seems to belong to the dynamics of the cartoon world defying gravity.
"Moment-um" series was shot during the construction of Disney Concert Hall depicting the stages of the building process. From top to bottom, the image flow, as the linear progression of time serves both the construction and the photographic documentation which are matched and divided into 2 panels of 15 photographs each. While the first panel depicts the detailed weaving of the substructure, the second panel approaches the abstraction of the re-ordering and multiplying surfaces of the building as if an outer shell of a living organism starting to grow in the middle of the city. |
